Visit of Lowell Sykes
Lowell Sykes, retired minister of Rivermont Church in Lynchburg, who has visited Whitby on several occasions with his wife Barbara in the past came on a flying visit last week on 9/10 May with his grandson Chad. It was great to see Lowell again. Here are a few pictures to show that he is still in good health.
Lowell and Chad were doing a trip around Britain and parts of Europe. Some church folk were able to meet with Lowell whilst he was with us and all of us were amazed at his memory of people here and his up to date news. He clearly remembers his times here with great fondness. We were able to show him the photograph in the entrance of the church dedicated to the memory of Barbara after she went to be with the Lord.
Chad, Lowell's grandson, is clearly following in the footsteps of the male line of the Sykes family as he is about to embark on theologicall training for the ministry at a college in Charlotte. Who knows? Chad might continue with the family links with us in the future. Lowell was particularly keen to pass on his best wishes to all the church folk that he was not able to meet on his trip to Whitby.
As expected, Lowell's visit was a very hectic round of meals with various members of the church, together with sightseeing tours of Whitby, St Mary's Church, a ride on the steam train from Whitby to Grosmont, a trip to Robin Hoods Bay and a visit to Peter Brumby's grave (and other church folks graves) at the Larpool cemetery. Lowell had already been to France and also Jersey - where he met up with Pippa and Geoff (narrowly missing seeing Janet Kemp who arrived a few days after he left).
As you can see from the photos here, Lowell is in good health and his enthusiasm for the area and the church is such that we may well see him again in the future. Finally, Lowell told us that he prays for the church here every week. It is good to have Christian brothers and sisters around the world and to know that they are lifting us up in prayer!
